Diabetes is a disease that prevents the body from producing or utilizing effectively the hormone insulin produced in your pancreas which is responsible for the breaking down of sugar in the body.

Types of Diabetes

In type Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin – Type 1 diabetes is said to be an auto immune disease in which your body fights itself by destroying the beta cells in the pancreas preventing it from producing insulin. It is not a life style caused disease and found to be common in children, but adults suffer it too. When we eat, the body breaks down foods in to glucose with the help of the hormone insulin. In Type 1 diabetes, the body no longer produces insulin because of the auto immune diseases hence there is high sugar levels in the blood (a condition also known as hyperglycemia); making the body to be weak and tired. Other symptoms include, excessive thirst, headaches, trouble concentrating and blurred vision. High sugar levels in the blood

This can be treated in two ways:
  1. Taking an insulin Injection
  2. The use of insulin pump
Type 2 Diabetes,

This happens when the body does not produce enough insulin or not able to utilize it correctly. Mostly common in Adults but also affects children, It makes glucose to accumulate in the blood instead of being used up by the body, leading to a situation called Hyperglycemia characterized by Frequent urination, extreme hunger, excessive thirst, weakness, drowsiness, blurred vision, unusual weight loss. Early detection is key in fighting diabetes as it can lead to damage of other body organs like eyes, kidneys, stroke and heart diseases

Risk Factors:

Overweight, Family history, Not exercising

Eat more vegetables and high fiber diets and do regular exercise as advised by your health care professionals

Prevention

  • Diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Increase vitamin D level
  • Avoid Sedentary behavior
  • Stop smoking

Treatment:

Maintain healthy body weight

Treatment may also include prescription medications including Insulin

Diabetes needs to be kept in check to avoid health issues like blindness, kidney failure, heart disease and in some cases leg amputation.
